Web CMS market trends in Finland 2013

This article summarizes a few trends that have been fairly strong in Finland during the last two years or so. Somewhat similar trends can also be seen happening elsewhere in Scandinavia, but this article focuses specifically on Finland.

Strongest trends are the steady the rise of WordPress and Drupal. Bigger players like Microsoft, Oracle and Sitecore still have trouble in getting traction on the market in Finland. Even frameworks like Django seem to be challenging the traditional players when it comes to choosing technology to power world-class web presences. Especially the growth of mobile is driving big web renewals, but the Web CMS products don’t seem to have much to offer when it comes to building these highly responsive websites.

Project story: Reincarnation of a large online service site

Helen.fi is the external website for Helsingin Energia, an electricity company owned by the city of Helsinki with around 400k customers. The project seeks a significant user experience (UX) improvement. The budget for external suppliers is 200-300k euros. The technical execution begins in April 2013 and is set to take around half a year.

What they’ve learned the hard way is that a vendor may provide substandard service resulting in the customer wanting to change vendors to get better service. But changing partner is not always easy as many website owners find themselves locked into their current vendor.

CMS trends: App store model

CMS Expert Group Europe met in Basel in October. Issues on the table covered CMS usability issues, performance and optimization in web projects and we also took a look at CMS related marketing buzzwords like WEM and other new acronyms.

This time participants were mainly consultants and vendors (eg. Magnolia, Oracle, Onion.net), only Dan Jackson from London University College representing a customer with timely CMS challenges.

I will next outline my three main takeaways from the meeting. The takeaways are not direct observations from the meeting discussions, but more about my personal insights that got reinforced during the trip.
